The essays of late Tang Dynasty,enriched the history of Chinese prose with their extraordinary artistic achievements,extended the field of Ancient -Style Prose Movement in middle Tang Dynasty though our academic circles never pay enough attention on them.Hence,the author supposes to analyze the essays of late Tang Dynasty comprehensively,systematically and completely based on the texts themselves from the aspects of historical background,society,culture,psychology,etc.Beginning with the essayists’state of mind,through historical and aesthetic research,the author will illustrate the artistic contribution and position of the essays of late Tang Dynasty in the history of stylistics and literature from both macroscopical and microcosmic aspects,accordingly,accurately understand the essays.This dissertation contains two parts:introduction and main body.The introduction mainly consists of three aspects:the artistic characteristics of the essays,prolegomenon of the essays before Tang Dynasty and general description on the essays of late Tang Dynasty,from which the author summarizes that the creation of essays reached a climax until the late Tang Dynasty.The main body contains six chapters.Chapter one introduces the social and cultural backgrounds that the essays are flourishing in late Tang Dynasty.This chapter explores the political environment,thinking and cultural backgrounds,situations of the literary world,and the characteristics of essayist groups in late Tang Dynasty.Chapter two focuses on Luo Yin’s essays.The essayist was failed ten times in his imperial examinations and frustrated for his talent in all his life.His satiric essays are supreme in late Tang Dynasty.This chapter first summarizes Luo Yin’s life and his representative essays such as narration of historical stories and fiction of allegories,and then analyzes the artistic features of his essays.Chapter three expounds Pi Rixiu’s essays.Pi’s essays contain a higher artistic achievement among his extant works.His essays covered a broad range with sticking accomplishment:satiric essays commended for their incisive and trenchant style and leisure essays describing comfortable daily life.This chapter first introduces the essayist’s life and his distinctive essays,i.e.the essays of style of politics,record,leisure,and inscription,and then analyzes the artistic features of his essays.Chapter four demonstrates Lu Guimeng’s essays.He was a hermit,isolated from politics,but he was sensitive to social status quo.His essays revealed his reclusive delight and his discontentment and grief to the society.This chapter presents his life first and the representative essays on reclusion,description and autobiography,and then explains the artistic features of his essays.Chapter five expounds the essays of Liu Tui,Sun Qiao,Wu Nengzi and others.This chapter illustrates the prominent characteristics—profound in meaning,peculiar in style and speculative in thought of their essays respectively,meanwhile,briefly introduces other essayists’writing situations of that period.Chapter six analyzes the essays of late Tang Dynasty and Ancient-Style Prose Movement in middle Tang Dynasty,which are integrative in literary evolution.The latter initiated a new era for Chinese prose and provided an artistic nutrition and thinking reference for the former.Correspondingly,the essays of late Tang Dynasty,a new literary form influenced by Ancient-Style Prose Movement in middle Tang Dynasty,developed the scopes of ancient-style prose.This chapter elucidates the relationship between the es-says of late Tang Dynasty and Ancient-Style Prose Movement in middle Tang Dynasty from the aspects of the artistic innovation and development of essays of late Tang Dynasty,moreover,properly understands the importance of the essays of late Tang Dynasty in the history of stylistics and literature.The appendix includes two parts:one is the review collection on the essays of late Tang Dynasty in the past;the other is the index of theses and works on the essays of late Tang Dynasty.
